The European chemical industry is a foundation of the continent’s economy. Its research centers, factories and logistics chains are woven across the continent, providing the ideas and clever materials that enable manufacturers to turn out products that keep us clean, safe and comfortable in our homes and as we go about our daily lives.
Understanding this industry and its whys and wherefores isn’t easy. The forces that shape its locations, challenges and solutions are as complex as many of its formulas. To help those keen to acquire an accurate picture of the industry, what it does, where, and why, we have produced the ‘Landscape of the European Chemical Industry’. Providing a regional overview and country-by-country snapshots, we hope it will enable you to better understand the industry today, the challenges it faces, and our ambitions for the future.
Please note that the scope of the chemical industry differs from one country to the other. In some countries, the scope of the chemical industry is strictly limited to chemicals, under NACE 20 of the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Union. In other countries, the scope of the chemical industry also covers the pharmaceutical sector and the rubber & plastics sectors, i.e NACE 21 and NACE 22 respectively.
